Pitch Perfect is the logical culmination of the Glee phenomenon combined with the a Capella fixation popularized by Andy on the Office. I am particularly intrigued by this since, like Andy, I am a Cornelian and my youngest son is dying to join an a Capella group if and when he starts there next year.
The plot is pretty nonexistent…..a too-cool-for-school hottie (Anna Kendrick of Up in the Air and 50/50) comes to Barden U. where competing, gender-specific a Capella groups act like fraternities and sororities. Kendrick joins the failing hottie team that goes less hot with Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) and Ester Dean. Now there’s plenty of hotties left with Brittany Snow and Anna Camp. There’s even a touch or Capulet/Montague action with Skylar Astin joining the rival Treblemakers.
Some of the best humor comes from the announcers ala Best in Show with John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks. The singing itself is also pretty entertaining….just like on Glee.
Now I don’t know what accounts for this trend, but this has all the makings of a big economic success. This movie will play on all the musical flow of the new, straighter-edged generation of high schoolers who blend hip hop with American Bandstand and even a touch of karaoke.
This might be a stretch, but with hedge funds falling as short as they have for the last 18 months, this seems like a return to passive ETF investing. The Rock n’ Roll of Wall Street is momentarily giving way to the momentum and attractive fees of indexing…..and I tend to think Glee and Pitch Perfect are fun or the moment, but will give way again to 2+20 rock stars again soon enough I’m afraid.
